Now the dust has settled post the atd conference in New Orleans in May, (I know, this is a very tardy post!) but post my two week Eid break, I have had time to reflect on the event and process the key themes that resonated with me.Recharge your soul was the tagline for 2024, and I certainly felt I did that in New Orleans. Obviously, there was going to be big focus on AI and Gen AI but the key message for me was that Human Centricity is still critical in Learning and Development, and I believe even more so as we move into an age of incredible feats by machines and AI.Throughout the event, what struck me was how everyone connected in small sessions, in the event hall and in the Key Notes, something that being human is all about – social connections. The use of AI and GenAI in Learning is something we will all have to work with, now or at some point soon, but I believe it is something that will enable us, rather than surpass us. One of my favourite parts of the conference was ‘Dear World’. Circa 10,000 people being drawn to talk to strangers and open up on the most private of things was incredible. My experience with ‘Michael’, his real name, was emotional, fun, sad, happy, reflective, shared experience, tears and hugs. This wonderful man had shown real resilience to be the first person in his family to go to University, losing his father in the first semester hit him hard, but he drew strength from the fact he inspired his younger siblings and extended family to get an education at University. What an inspiration! This connection, a human connection, is something I think machines, technology and AI will not have, well at least in my lifetime, and we should embrace that we are something different that is to be celebrated. The other session that highlighted how important social connection and being there for each other was Dan Pink’s Key Note about how we are moving past quiet quitting and into ragism. Too much work, pace of change and how we have to deal with multiple things at once, often throughout the day, has really impacted our mental health and well-being.Let's all look out for each other! One key message I really enjoyed from Dan, was create a ‘to don’t’ list! Subtract things that you don’t want to do anymore. Simple but effective. His other areas of focus was about taking breaks. Even standing up from your desk is beneficial, but going outside for 15 mins is the best thing you can do, even better go with a colleague. So add to your ‘to don’t’ list – sit down all day and eat lunch at my desk!My final thoughts on atd 2024 was how important Learning and Development still is for organisations, and the need to get a seat at the table is a good thing, but being able to engage in business speak (finance, understanding your organisation, the market, etc.) will give you better traction with the C Suite and enable you to have mission critical conversations with your Executives. Here's me trying to look cool! 😂

Gary Clarke BEng MA MSc FCMI CMgr Thank you for creating the curiosity around this conference even before it got started. This is a much awaited post, and really worth waiting. The conference’s focus on human-centricity in L&D, alongside Gen AI, is spot-on. The power of genuine connections, like your experience with ‘Michael,’ is something technology can never replicate. Dan Pink’s advice on creating a ‘to don’t’ list and prioritizing breaks is practical wisdom. This somehow reflects on my current reading Katherine May's "Wintering: The Power of Rest and Retreat in Difficult Times" - The author offers an instruction on the transformative power of rest and retreat. Thank you once again for empowering and harnessing us with lots of effort. 🙌

A thought provoking read Gary, I love the “to don’t list”. I am sure most of us are guilty of disappearing down a rabbit hole at some time in the past. Hope you are well! 👊

Today is a very happy day! I learnt that our wonderful colleague Dr Leena Periyasamy, affectionately known to me as Dr. P, has been internally promoted in Cognizant to Senior Manager!I could not be happier for such a wonderful person, who is a delight to work with; she challenges us every day in Group Learning and Development and is a thought leader in the learning space. Although Leena works for Cognizant supporting my function, we see her as one of our own, such is her impact on my team. Many congratulations, Dr. P! This is thoroughly deserved and we are all proud of you, none more so than me.Keep challenging us!(Dr. P, pictured in the wonderful, flowery blouse)

This weekend, I’m delighted and grateful to have the opportunity to travel to the ATD conference in New Orleans for the next week. It’s been quite some time since my last conference experience, and I’m eagerly looking forward to immersing myself in the latest trends and thinking related to Talent Development. One of my primary interests lies in exploring how we can leverage GenAI within L&D. GenAI has the potential to revolutionize how we approach upskilling our staff and enhancing organizational performance. I’m curious about practical applications, best practices, and the ethical considerations surrounding GenAI adoption resulting in Talent Development. As critical partners within our organizations, we L&D professionals play a pivotal role. I’m keen to learn from other global leaders and hear how they navigate their seat at the table, influence strategic decisions, and contribute value, including what strategies they employ to align L&D initiatives with broader organizational goals.Leadership discussions have been buzzing lately, especially during our BOLD HR conference and the Qatar HR Forum that I attended this week. I’m fascinated by the concept of human-centered leadership. How can we lead with empathy, authenticity, and compassion? How do we create a culture of Trust, Empowerment and Accountability? Finally, as L&D leaders, how do we foster a culture that encourages a growth mindset and continuous learning? While I’ve signed up for several events, two speakers stand out - Britt Andreatta: I’m excited to hear her insights. Her expertise in neuroscience, leadership, and learning design promises to be enlightening; Matthew McConaughey: The keynote speaker! I’m curious about his perspective on leadership, performance, personal philosophy, growth, and perhaps with a touch of that famous McConaughey charm. In summary, this week is not just about attending sessions - it’s about connecting, learning, and bringing fresh ideas back to our organizations. If you’re at ATD too, I’d love to hear about your focus areas!

Last week, I was delighted to speak at day 2 of the Qatar Airways Ground Services Town Hall, where I shared the BOLD flight path we are taking in Group Learning and Development. 🛫 Sharing the stage with two esteemed colleagues, SVP Talent and VP Talent Acquisition, we were also invited to be part of a panel to discuss key Talent initiatives with our colleagues in Ground Services. The operational training part of my function works closely with, and delivers training to Ground Services across the globe. In fact, in the last 12 months, this part of my function has delivered training to more than 28,000 people, delivered more than 4,200 classes, and in over 100 countries. Astonishing! Super proud of this team that truly delivers excellence around the world. 🌟 Many thanks to Paul Coventry for inviting me to present along with the SVP Talent and VP Talent Acquisition to over 200 of our Ground Services Colleagues.#QR_GS_FROMTHEGROUNDUP #HRBOLD2024 #QATARAIRWAYS

After 9 or so months in Qatar, and loving the country and my job with Qatar Airways, I'm taking a leaf out of John Hinchliffe's book and going to try and set up an L&D Community in Doha! If you're in Doha, in Learning or Talent Development, and would be interested in a meet up, then do let me know! no date as yet, but thinking early June. Over to you, LinkedIn network, please share if you are connected to someone in Doha/Qatar, and thanks to John for the tips! Comment here if interested, or DM me.

Day 2, and final day of our HR BOLD conference, and what a privilege to see Dave Ulrich present on the future of HR, and how we can be BOLD in Qatar Airways HR. Inspiring, insightful and fun, something of a bucket list from a work perspective. We were also privileged to hear from our inspirational GCEO, who talked to us about trust, empowerment and accountability. On day 1, I presented our L&D flightpath, learning maturity curve, and BOLD destinations where we will challenge ourselves over the next 3 years. A final thank you to for all the amazing work in 2023/24 from my team, so nice to have so many at the event. Thanks Team! #HRBold2024 #qatarairways

This week was another significant milestone in my 9-month Qatar Airways journey. With over400 Learning and Development (L&D) colleaguesacross the company, I took the initiative to establish aLearning Community of Practice. Our goal is to foster connections, facilitate knowledge sharing, and promote collaboration among all team members.Following my role as chair during the SteerCo meeting with several senior L&D colleagues last week, I hosted the inauguralLearning Community of Practice (LCOP) meetingthis week. A total of21 leaders and managersrepresenting14 different business functions, subsidiaries, and departmentswithin Qatar Airways Group convened to deliberate on strategies for enhanced engagement and collaboration.A remarkable session unfolded as we delved into the diverse programs delivered by various teams. Our discussions centered around harnessing the collective strength of ONE TEAM, fostering closer collaboration, and exploring the extensive array of learning opportunities across the entire Group.I left the meeting feeling excited about the prospect of the power of this talented group of L&D professionals and what we can achieve working together as a community. Key takeaways from the meeting are:• Collaboration and Networking• Cross-Functional Insights• Engagement Strategies• Resource Sharing• Feedback LoopIn the next meeting we will be discussing the 2024/25 Learning Conference for Qatar Airways Group, which will be held in the Autumn, building on the success of the Group Learning and Development conference success in January.
