Strawberry and Banana Smoothie

So many people make smoothies and just load them up with fruit. Fruit is great for us, but it’s also high in sugar and carbs. In order for a smoothie to be filling it has to have protein as well.

Our key to a great smoothie is protein first, fruit for flavor and some healthy fats (depending on what else I’m eating). This Strawberry Banana Smoothie is our favorite, but I also love a Green Smoothie, plain Banana Smoothie, Fruit Smoothie, Mango Smoothie, or an Orange Smoothie.

This recipe is high in protein, tastes amazing and can help keep you full all day. Here’s why we love it:

What makes this the Best Strawberry Banana Smoothie

We love this strawberry banana smoothie because it’s delicious, but there are so many things to love about it!

  • High Protein– This recipe has nonfat greek yogurt and protein powder, giving it 20g+ of protein per smoothie!
  • Easy to Make– You only need 5 simple ingredients to make this recipe, and it’s as easy as adding to a blender and turning it on!
  • Easy to Customize– There are tons of ways you can customize this recipe depending on what you have on hand!

Banana Strawberry Smoothie variations

This smoothie recipe is so versatile. Here are a few different ways that you can customize it.

Strawberry – You can use fresh strawberries or frozen strawberries. Blueberries or raspberries would also work well. We also have a Blueberry Smoothie Recipe.

Banana– We haven’t tried this recipe without the banana but I’m sure it would work fine, it would just be less sweet.

YogurtNonfat greek yogurt is a great way to add protein and richness to smoothies for a low amount of calories. You can substitute with dairy free yogurt or full fat yogurt. You can also skip the yogurt, but may need a little bit more almond milk.

Milk– Any milk will work in this recipe. Almond milk, Dairy, or other non dairy milks will all work.

Protein PowderProtein powder isn’t necessary but it is recommended for this recipe. The added protein will help keep you full, rather than this just being blended fruit (sugar and carbs). Any protein powder will work. We like this protein powder best.

Frozen Fruit– You can substitute frozen fruit for fresh fruit. Substitute 1:1.

Other Add Ins– Feel free to add in other nuts or seeds to this recipe. Chia or flax seeds would make a great addition!

Greens– We love to add a handful of spinach or kale to this recipe. You can’t taste it and it’s delicious. You could also try our Immunity Smoothie

Frozen Cauliflower: Frozen cauliflower is relatively tasteless and helps thicken smoothies. It’s also a great way to add in sneaky veggies. 1/4 cup cauliflower rice will blend nicely in this recipe.

Strawberry Banana Peanut Butter Smoothie– Add 1/2 tablespoon of peanut butter to this recipe.

How to make a Strawberry Banana Smoothie with Yogurt

  1. In a blender combine all ingredients
  2. Blend until smooth.. that’s it!

How to store a Strawberry and Banana Smoothie

This recipe is best to enjoy right after blending. I wouldn’t recommend storing it in the refrigerator overnight as it will separate.

Freezing: You can freeze this recipe in popsicles if you have leftovers.

Strawberry and Banana Smoothie FAQs

Are strawberry banana smoothies good for you?

Strawberry Banana Smoothies can be good for you. This recipe has added greek yogurt and protein powder to help make it more filling and high in protein while being low in fat.

What should you not mix in a smoothie?

There are really no ‘wrong’ things to add into a smoothie. We try to not add a ton of fruit to our smoothies, only because they’re not as filing as if you were to add protein and yogurt to them.

Can you make a Strawberry Banana Smoothie ahead of time?

We wouldn’t recommend making this smoothie ahead of time. Smoothies can separate after they sit for too long, and you’d likely need to re-mix it up. You can slice your fruit ahead of time and put it in a container in the refrigerator to save time.

Do you need ice for a smoothie?

No you don’t need ice for smoothies. Ice can help thicken a smoothie but it’s not necessary.

Do strawberries have to be frozen for a smoothie?

They don’t have to be frozen, but if you use fresh strawberries, you will have a thinner smoothie.

How do you thicken up a smoothie?

To thicken up a smoothie, use frozen fruit, greek yogurt, or add ice.

Are smoothies better with milk or water?

Smoothies are much better with milk than water. Milk helps make a smoothie creamy and slightly thicker.

Do you need yogurt to make a smoothie?

No you don’t need yogurt to make a smoothie thicker, but it’s a great addition to smoothies. Nonfat greek yogurt is low in calories and high in protein – perfect for adding to a smoothie!

What is the best blender to use to make smoothies?

Any blender will work for smoothies.

Our favorite blender is the Nutribullet. It’s under $50 and works amazing! Here’s a link to the one we have.

We also love our Vitamix, but it’s much more expensive. Here’s a link to the one we have.
