Skilling in the name of

From the very beginning, skills have been the backbone of RuneScape, serving as the core progression of your journey. They guide the adventures you undertake, the challenges you master, and how you interact with the world of Gielinor.

Historically, achieving level 99 in a skill was a lofty goal for many players. However, after years of introducing new content, bonuses, and faster skilling methods, this goal has become much more attainable.

While most players haven't yet achieved skill mastery, more and more are reaching these heights. With this in mind, we want to keep the thrill alive by continuously crafting new challenges for you to conquer while continuing to improve the skilling experience. That's why we're trying something a little different.

We are gradually raising the skill cap to 110, starting with Mining and Smithing going live on August 12th

Forging ahead

The world is always changing, in recent years, isolated deposits of Daemonheim ore were discovered by prospectors in the wilderness and now metals once thought only to exist in the depths of Daemonheim have surfaced on the peninsula.

Now that they are here, savvy adventurers will be able to use their Mining skills to gather new Daemonheim ores and use the Smithing Skill to smelt those precious metals in order to craft Primal equipment and armour. You may have seen some fanatical folk roaming around this week wearing the armour already!

Daemonheim Mining

The 10 Dungeoneering Ores (Novite → Promethium) are coming to the surface world as core mining ores, accessible with level 100 Mining. These new mining rocks will be scattered around the Daemonheim Peninsula, waiting to be discovered.

By combining one of each ore, players can forge five Primal Bars. These Primal Bars can then be used to craft Primal armour and weapons, as well as the Primal Pickaxe, which will become the best smithable pickaxe available. Additionally, players can upgrade their Elder Rune ore box to a Primal Ore Box once they reach 100 Smithing by using the new bars. This upgraded ore box can store the new Daemonheim ores along with the existing ones.

These new ores will function just like current core ores, they will be tradeable, droppable, and storable in the ore box and metal bank. Stone Spirits will also be available for these new ores as a single stone spirit that can be used for any of the 10 ores, these spirits will come from a variety of places, check out our patch notes on Monday to find out more. As you level your Mining you will continue to gain benefits to mining Daemonheim ores that will aid on your journey to level 110. And that's not all:

T100 Augmented Pickaxe

Although the Primal pickaxe +5 is the best new smithable pickaxe, it has one drawback which is that it can’t be augmented. That’s where the other new pickaxe comes in!

You’ll be familiar with tier 70 Crystal and tier 80 Imcando tools for skilling, after combining both to create the likes of the tier 90 Pickaxe of Earth and Song and tier 99 Mattock of Time and Space. It’s time to introduce the next level of tools, this time at tier 100.

You'll need to bring along your Pickaxe of Earth and Song and delve into the Underworld to follow another lengthy process to obtain this new best-in-slot pickaxe - perfect for smashing away at Daemonheim ores. Don’t worry about losing your item level and perks on your current augmented Pickaxe of Earth and Song, as upgrading to this new pickaxe will retain both!

The tier 100 pickaxe will require 100 Smithing to create alongside some other requirements and 100 Mining to wield and use. This item will not be tradeable but who would want to go through all the effort just to give it away.

As for numbers, it matches the stats of a +5 upgraded Primal Pickaxe, but will also be augmentable so you can hone it to your specifications! See below for stats:

Pickaxe Penetration Minimum Progress Maximum Progress Average Progress
Pickaxe of Earth & Song 225 50 140 95
Primal Pickaxe +5 275 55 155 105
Tier 100 Augmentable Pickaxe 275 55 155 105

You will be learning to reforge your Pickaxe of Earth & Song using ancient methods and rare materials but we will leave this up for players to find out at launch!

Primal Smithing

After mining up all the Daemonheim ores players will be able to smelt them into Primal bars and forge those to create Primal equipment, which was previously only available within the Dungeoneering floors of Daemonheim as drops from monsters and bosses. Now players will be able to craft their own entire set! Including a full set of Primal Armour (Full helm, platebody, platelegs, boots, and gloves), Primal 2h Sword , Primal Kiteshield , Primal Pickaxe and even a upgrade to the ore box!

To forge and wield these items will require level 100 Smithing to make and level 99 in Attack and Defence to be equipped. At base, they will start as tier 85 equipment. Each subsequent upgrade will increase this tier by 1 level, until reaching a maximum of tier 90 stats at +5 upgrade. As with all other smithable armour, Primal armour will be tank armour.

The Primal Pickaxe will act as a tier 100 pickaxe. It requires 100 Mining to wield, and 100 Smithing to create. Like all other smithable pickaxes, it will not be augmentable through the Invention skill, and upgrading it will only increase it's damage stats.

A new addition to Primal smithing since our initial Right Click Examine back in May is Primal armour spikes! Primal armour spikes are made in a similar fashion to existing ones, but do 125% of your smithing level as damage instead of 100% as seen in Elder Rune and Alloy armour spikes. Primal armour spikes also have the alloy effect where there's a 10% chance for a spike to do +1000% damage, and they can also be turned into Primal abyssal armour spikes.

Speaking of which, we've made a handful of quality of life changes to all armour spikes such as making them tradeable, and changing the proc chance of all abyssal spikes from 25% to 100%. Check out the patch notes on Monday for more info!

Masterwork Sword

For reaching level 110 Smithing, you’ll be rewarded with the ability to meticulously craft the Masterwork 2H Sword. Fire up the forges and grab your best hammer as you once again need to hammer-out some glorious bars to follow a lengthy and complex process to make this magnificent sword.

Players will use some of the existing masterwork process alongside old and new materials to craft different pieces of the weapon such as the Blade, the Grip and even the Gem. Be ready to fold a lot of Glorious bars in this process as you will need them alongside the new Primal bars, you will also need to break down existing powerful weapons such as Chaotic weaponry, the Twin Furies' Blades, and Drygore weaponry in order to gather powerful essence that will imbue the blade!

Make-x Smithing

One of the highly requested features you've expressed was the ability to smith multiple items at once. Well, we've gone ahead and added exactly that. Look out for a snazzy slider on the Smithing interface that lets you create or upgrade multiple items at once!

Looking Primal

We're really grateful for all of your feedback - your voices have helped shape Gielinor and our latest updates this year. Take another look at our original concepts for the Primal 2-Handed Sword and Pickaxe:

We sifted through heaps of your feedback from our Right-Click Examine developer blogs, where players shared insights into the style, shape, color, and feel of these items. After an extensive review period, the 'classic' theme emerged as the favorite. So, we've gone with a faithful remaster featuring a sleek black and grey color scheme. Stylish!

However, we have made some small adjustments to the Pickaxe based on your feedback. For example, we straightened the handle instead of curving it, as many of you mentioned it reminded you of an Archaeology Mattock! Don't let the folks at the Varrock Museum catch you with one of these...

We also want to extend a huge thank you to everyone who helped shape the design of the new Primal 2-Handed Sword and the Primal Pickaxe. Your feedback is invaluable in creating items that you all love.

The forges of Gielinor are about to heat up! Whether you're a seasoned smith or returning home to Gielinor, we can't wait to hear your thoughts.

We look forward to seeing you all out there!
