Learn how to make your own Homemade Coconut Butter in 10 minutes! Just 1 ingredient! Use for cakes, cupcakes, toast, muffins, fudge. So easy and so delicious!
Seriously, all you need is 10 mins to have homemade, creamy coconut butter. Well, that and a bag of this dried shredded unsweetened coconut. Make sure to not buy reduced fat shredded coconut!! It won’t work. I use coconut butter in many recipes on my blog. It is so easy and fast to make and tastes delicious!
You don’t technically need to use Bob’s Red Mill. I just really like this brand because it is very fresh and finely ground and it worked absolutely perfectly.
HOW TO MAKE HOMEMADE COCONUT BUTTER
Add 3 cups of unsweetened shredded coconut to a food processor and process for about 10 minutes, that’s it! You will definitely need a good qualityfood processor. A food processor works much better than a Vitamix or blender!
If your climate is cooler, you may need to let it run twice as long. Scrape the sides as necessary. It will seem as though nothing is happening the first 2 minutes, but let it keep going. It will start to thicken as a paste, keep going, and before you know it, it will turn into silky smooth coconut butter. Please note that depending on the size of your food processor, it may require more or less coconut to process properly and the time may take longer. It should literally be a runny consistency before you stop.
Transfer to a glass container to store.
HOW TO STORE COCONUT BUTTER
Keep the coconut butter stored at room temperature in the pantry. It will keep for months. It will become very hard during storage. To use again, you will need to warm it first, so that it becomes a liquid again.
To do this, heat the glass container for 15-30 seconds just until it is soft enough to stir it around. Stir until it becomes soft and chunky. If needed, heat another 5-10 seconds and stir until it is completely liquid and melted before using in a recipe. As you continue to stir, the warmth helps it to turn into liquid. Be very careful about overheating coconut, or it will burn and be ruined.

Just add to a food processor and let it run 5-10 minutes and voila, coconut butter! That's how fast it goes for me in the summer. If your climate is cooler, you may need to let it run twice as long. It will start to thicken as a paste, keep going, and before you know it, it will turn into silky smooth coconut butter. Hi Brandi. I want to make the coconut butter but what quantity of butter i.e. how many cups or tablespoons, do you end up with using 3 cups coconut? TIA
Just like dairy butter, it can be applied on muffins, toast, or other types of baked bread. The small coconut flakes make it look like frosting. If you are allergic to nuts, consider this as a perfect alternative for peanut butter spread. Other than baked goods, coconut butter can also be drizzled over fruits.
What is the shelf life of coconut butter? Coconut butter is naturally stable and lasts for about 1 year to 15 months depending on the brand and if it contains preservatives or not. However, the consistency of coconut butter will vary according to the temperature while in storage.
It can take anywhere from 3-18 minutes, depending on desired smoothness and your machine. If your coconut just doesn't seem to want to turn into smooth butter for some reason (climate, elevation, or just a naturally-lower-fat bag of coconut), add a few tbsp coconut oil to the blender, and that should fix it!
Creamed coconut, also known as coconut butter, is a coconut product made from the unsweetened dehydrated fresh pulp of a mature coconut, ground to a semi-solid white creamy paste. It is sold in the form of a hard white block which can be stored at room temperature.
Coconut butter can be stored in an airtight container for up to a month at room temperature, or for up to 3 months in the fridge. It will harden when chilled, but you can warm it up to make it pourable again. Storage Tip: Keep moisture out of your coconut butter jar for the longest shelf life.
How Do You Use Coconut Butter? Despite the name, this isn't really a butter substitute, though it is delicious spread across a piece of toast or on a muffin. It has a low smoking point, so you shouldn't use it for frying or sautéing ingredients. It can replace butter when baking, though.
It is an excellent source of healthy fats, with 18g of fat in just two tablespoons. Coconut butter is also rich in minerals including potassium, phosphorus, and magnesium. Coconut butter comes in pre-packaged jars, or you can make it from scratch using pure coconut.
If cooling occurs slowly, the fatty acids can crystallize into large clumps, causing graininess. If cooling occurs rapidly, a process known as tempering, the fatty acids will not have time to crystallize, creating a finished product which is smooth.

A good rule of thumb is to replace about 3/4 of the butter in a recipe with olive, canola, or vegetable oil. (If the recipe calls for 1 cup butter, use ¾ cup oil.) You can use a 1:1 ratio when it comes to coconut oil.
Coconut butter burns easily and isn't your best bet for stovetop cooking over anything higher than very low heat for a brief time. It's perfect for making fudge and candies and may be substituted for butter or oil. It will add a strong, sweet, coconut flavor to your recipes.
What is condensed coconut milk? This product is thick and sweet, it's made from coconut milk, water, sugar and usually a thickener. Best for using in drinks such as pina coladas or as a dairy-free substitute for condensed milk. It's not suitable as a substitute for coconut milk or cream.
Coconut Butter (also known as creamed coconut) is quickly becoming a hot commodity in the coconut world. It has a light, creamy white colouring with a buttery consistency. This product is popular in foods and beverages that require a tropical coconut flavour such as curries, sauces and desserts.
Coconut cream is the same thing as coconut milk—coconut meat blended with water—but it contains less water. While coconut milk is thin like cow's milk, coconut cream is thick like whipped cream. You can find this fat-rich cream floating on the top of any canned coconut milk, or you can buy it in a dedicated can.
Coconut butter tends to be richer in medium-chain fatty acids, which are easily metabolized for energy, while peanut butter contains more protein and higher levels of certain vitamins and minerals like vitamin E and magnesium.

Add to your oatmeal: this is one of my favorite ways to use it! A spoonful will melt right on top of your morning oatmeal. It's so good on this Almond Joy Oatmeal, but also on all of these oatmeal recipes.
You can buy coconut butter in the stores or make Homemade Coconut Butter. 2 store brands I like are the Nutiva and Maranatha brands. You can use it for vegan baked desserts or no-bake desserts or simply spread it on some fresh toast or even pancakes, it will melt immediately and taste amazing.
